چکیده

In this paper we are seeking general definitions of vagueness. They have much to do with dialectical reasoning since we are interested in vagueness caused by differing opinions, or points of view, about the definition of concepts. After giving three definitions for vagueness we sketch ways of choosing meaning for vague concepts, using “direct democracy”. In this context we also define open texture and a related concept, porosity. I am currently working on my Ph.D. thesis at the University of Montreal under the direction of Paul Bratley, of the Département d’informatique et de recherche opérationnelle, and Daniel Poulin of the Centre de recherche en droit public. Our team’s main subject of research is legal interpretation with differing points of view to reproduce the adversarial dimension in legal reasoning (see [Bratley 94] and [Poulin 93]). This paper is an offspring of that work. 1) Vagueness and Open texture Although vagueness is a vague concept, this section contains a few “natural language” definitions intended to shed some light on the subject. Quoting Susskind ([Susskind 87], p. 187), vagueness can be seen as a form of apparent imprecision: [...] words are vague when they clearly have no definite set of necessary and sufficient conditions governing their use and application. Terms such as ‘fair’ and ‘reasonable’, in this sense, can be seen as vague. We can say that concepts are vague because their meaning is varying along time, points of view, application domains, etc. The variations make impossible to cast single definitions with fixed necessary and sufficient conditions. Open texture, then, is a possibility of vagueness (id., quoting Waismann):

On the Fuzzy Texture Spectrum for Natural Microtextures Characterization

Texture is an important spatial feature, useful for segmenting objects in an image. Texture Spectrum is a statistical approach to texture analysis. In this paper we proposed a Texture-based approach that considers the vagueness of the images and has into account the human beings.

Educational Human-computer Debate: a Computational Dialectics Approach

Theories of learning suggest that dialogue is important in shaping conceptual development. However, there is widespread debate as to the forms of dialogue and which are effective in an educational context. In addressing these issues, we have analysed current knowledge concerning dialectics in philosophy and education. We propose to adopt a computational dialectical approach to study the issues ...

Testing Computational Dialectic

Computational dialectics are a powerful way to structure the communicative acts that are expressed during the process of argumentation. Many such systems have been proposed but there has been no consensus over what constitutes a good system, or on what basis such a consensus could be built. This paper introduces a testbed for computational dialectics that enables disparate systems to be easily ...

Texture Analysis using Rough Texton

The present paper derived a new texture classification tactic using textons and rough sets. Texton is a statistical approach used to analyze the texture of an image. Textures will be developed only if the side elements lie within the contiguity. Texton Image has the discrimination power of color, texture and shape features. In the proposed tactic texton using rough texture spectrum and color fe...

Computational Dialectics for Arguing Agents

In this paper, we extract its computational content from Hegelian Marxist dialectics and consider the utilization in agents’ world. This is a novel approach to conflict resolution, cooperation, reconciliation, negotiation and so on that are main concerns in agent-oriented computing. We first examine two approaches to static dialectical logics: the dialectical logics DL and DM by Routley and Mey...
